Services Provided

  • Direct provision of computer data processing support to GCRC investigators.
  • Work closely with the GCRC Biostatistician to assist individual investigators with the initial planning and development of their protocols in order to:
  •    anticipate and define computer/data management requirements
assure that data collection strategies are appropriate
develop protocol-specific forms and database interfaces for timely data entry
plan for data validation such as checking for out-of-range values and invalid entries
  • Data Scanning. Informatics has implemented a system for automated data input via digital scanning of custom-designed paper forms. This system includes a high speed multipage feed scanner, form design and character recognition software that markedly facilitates data entry and validation. Data forms designed jointly by the investigator and the Bioinformatics manager are filled out during the data collection process and are then scanned for exporting to database and statistical packages.
  • Work with the Biostatistician to direct GCRC investigators to the Informatics database and statistical analysis applications appropriate for their research.
  • Develop data scripts and automated algorithms for routine database management. This includes developing routines for exporting the data to other statistical software packages as required.
  • Assist investigators in the preparation of their individual grant applications. This includes automation of the grant application process through implementation of computer generated forms PHS398 and 2590. Templates for these forms are available in Wordperfect and MS Word format on both the Macintosh and Windows platforms.
Education

  • Instruct in formal courses sponsored by the GCRC including the annual course "Introduction to Clinical Research"
  • Instruct and assist clinical investigators and GCRC staff in the adaptation of standard software packages such as Word, Endnote, and Excel, which assist in conducting and reporting clinical research (e.g. creating tables, footnotes, and bibliographies or designing spreadsheets for calculating protocol schedules and utilization).
  • Instruct and assist in the use of database software for storing research data and statistical analysis programs for data analysis and presentation.
  • Provide on-site individual and small group instruction regarding software updates, use of, and access to, the LAN, and world wide web network resources for:
  •    GCRC investigators
       Fellows
       GCRC administrative and nursing staff
